Logline: A social-climbing Indian Untouchable encounters high-caste violent retribution as he tries to better himself.
Writer’s Bio: James M. Freeman is a Harvard-educated, retired university professor of anthropology (San Jose State) and winner of a 1990 American Book Award for “Hearts of Sorrow.” He bases his screenplays on his decades of research and writing about India and Vietnamese refugees and immigrants. His feature screenplay, “The Time of Killing,” and excerpts/stories based on it have won five awards, while his short screenplays, “Untouchable Student,” “Untouchable Thief,” and “Best Interests” have won six awards. He is also the producer and writer of “The Myth of the Buddha’s Birthplace,” an award-winning documentary film distributed by Berkeley Media.
Writer’s Statement: My screenplays are based on my decades of research and writing about India and Vietnamese refugees and immigrants.
